Recognition of Visitors: Jennifer Shapiro, Lifestyle Essentials
Motion to approve the November minutes was made by Wayne Mosley; seconded by Gus Janszen. Motion approved.
Additions to the agenda:
· Stiney is talking to the Mayor about a resolution thanking Michele Gottschlich for her dedication to the village (Recreation Commission, Bike Trail promotion within the village, representative to CACC).
New Business:
Quarterly Report from Jennifer Shapiro, Lifestyle Essentials
· Numbers are comparable to last year. More members achieving Wall of Champions status.
· Member Appreciation Days have included bottled water and fruit give-a-ways. Lifestyle Essentials is looking for additional ideas.
· A “free” Fit Defense class was held with 14 attendees; but after this class numbers were low, so the class was cancelled. (This class mixed fitness exercises with self defense moves.)
· Additional Spinning and Boot Camp classes have been added to the winter session.
· A FitFlex Pass was introduced; a 10-class punch pass was added for the winter session.
· Quarterly Assessment Days are being added. On designated days, patrons can have their blood pressure, body composition, waist/hip ratio, or complete a flexibility test .
· Recommendations were made to add a beginners level class (some current class listing titles sound intimidating to someone new to fitness). Also, add a “keep it going” style class to help encourage new people to keep going on their new fitness lifestyle.
· Upcoming programs/events include Biggest Loser, “free” fruit day, and Kidz Fitness Day.
Discuss Code of Conduct (Policy Guideline Manual section 1.7) and additional verbiage/procedure/process
· Advantages and disadvantages to adding procedures; but there are advantages and disadvantages to a discretionary process, too.
· Education and training for the coaches about the Code of Conduct policy will empower coaches to bring a problem to the recreation director or sports supervisor instead of coaches trying to deal with it themselves. Give each coach a copy of the current Code of Conduct policy, with examples of problems and how to deal with them; and include information/examples point on when an issue should be brought to the recreation department’s attention.
· Create an opportunity for coaches (e.g. coaches’ Meeting) to meet and discuss what level they are coaching, what kids they have, and how they have dealt with particular players.
· Commission members are encouraged to review the Code of Conduct policy for potential further discussion at February’s meeting.
Old Business:
Evendale Bike Plan update
· Evendale’s ordinances relating to bike codes have been turned over to the police department and the village solicitor for review. The hope is to have our codes and those of the surrounding communities match for easy bike travel between communities.
· David Nichols, Michele Gottschlich, Jason Ramler, and Robin Caruthers recently walked Evendale’s section of the Mill Creek. The group was looking to see how much work would need to be done to create a bike and leisure path along the creek. The group was impressed with how clear the area was and what few obstacles there were. The recommendation would be to stay on the east side of the creek.
· The path would be for bicyclists, walkers, runners, etc. This type of development could be a great recreational value to the community.
· The Glendale-Milford Bike Lane delineation will be completed in the Spring (the weather caught up to the crew last Fall).
· Logos for t-shirts are being created to help promote bicycling in Evendale.
· Jason Ramler, URS Engineers, is collecting data and should have a report next month. Hopefully, a stakeholders’ meeting can be held at the end of February and an input meeting in March. URS should be finished with their part of the project by the end of the first quarter 2011.
· Queen City Bike Club has a promotion going on where they will come out to a business and assess the “bike friendliness” of the organization (number of bike racks, access to the complex/building, ways to secure a person’s bike, etc.)
· Blue Ash has begun a promotional campaign regarding healthy communities and healthy youth.
Director's Report:
· December and January fitness center comment cards were reviewed by commission members. One person had asked Councilman Vonderhaar about replacing the treadmills in the fitness center. David told everyone that we had replaced the ellipticals and bikes last year with plans to replace the treadmills this year. However, the treadmill capital monies have been placed on the department’s contingency funding list.
· The department collects certain recycle items which are sent to a recycling company, which in return, pays the department a small fee. The department uses those funds to purchase the bags you see on our recycling bins around the building and grounds.
· The Council Committee and Council are working with David on fee guidelines.
· Membership 2011 sales and renewals are going well. 30% of resident households are already members for 2011. A full breakdown list will be included in next month’s commission packet.
· The department is working on a mailer to residents with information about “what we do” and “did you know.” Recently, we have had several longtime residents come in and ask about what the department has to offer.
Phi Lambda Pi Report:
· The group’s annual Holiday Party & Overnight took place in December. The group went to Montgomery Inn, GameWorks, and Lazer Kraze before returning to the recreation center. 25 members attended the event.
· The annual trip to Gatlinburg occurs next month over President’s weekend. The group will not be staying in a chalet this year; but a resort style hotel with a water park inside.
· Preliminary plans for the annual Awards Night celebration have begun.
· Snow Much Fun and Daddy Daughter Dance volunteer projects are coming up this weekend and next month.
Open Discussion:
· Snow Much Fun is tomorrow night. Commission members are encouraged to sign up and attend. This is a fun social event for village residents, and their grandchildren, who can enjoy Starbucks Coffee, hot chocolate, desserts and entertainment and watch a professional from Artic Diamond transform a giant block of ice into a beautiful ice sculpture! Children can jump in our Ice Berg Bounce House or slide down the Alpine Slide; make snowflakes or real snow; play Snowflake Bingo; make a craft; or attendees can just hang out with friends and listen to cool music!
· Matt White has given two week notice that he is leaving us after 10 years of employment with the department. He has been a building attendant, basketball coach, and an advisor with our Phi Lambda Pi teen group. He will be missed, and hard to replace. Everyone wishes him well in his new business venture.
· The current basketball uniforms need to be replaced. The uniforms are looking very worn; and our teams have gone from the best looking to the worst looking teams in the league.
Motion to adjourn made at 8:46am by John Doviak; seconded by Gus Janszen. Motion approved.
